Complete Blood Count

If you have leukemia a complete blood count (CBC) will most likely show anemia and a low number of platelets. While it's possible with leukemia that a white blood cell count (WBC) normal, a CBC will provide numbers and percentages of the different cells. If this CBC is abnormal it may be an indication of leukemia. Patients suffering from AML may have high leukocyte counts and typically have low counts of both red blood cells and platelets. Many patients with AML have low counts of all of the major components of the blood. In patients with AML leukemic blast cells are usually present when the blood is viewed under a microscope.
